Take a stone in your hand and close your fist around it until it starts to beat, live, speak and move

Váldit geađggi gihtii ja doallat dan čorpma siste dassážii go dat álgá coahkkit, eallit, hupmat ja lihkadit Take a stone in your hand and close your fist around it until it starts to beat, live, speak and move - Nils-Aslak Valkeapää I´m an indigenous, Sámi artivist, mother, companion, traditionalist, protector, visionary and human being. For years I´ve been protecting our land in Sápmi and I´ve learned that there is no change without protest. The only way to change things is to resist, protect, react, mobilize and challenge. I´m fighting for a better future and justice, I´m fighting for my children and generations to come. I´m fighting for our Mother. Mother Earth. She as everyone of us, has the right to exist and live. I´m listening my ancestors and listening the ancestors yet to come and therefore I´m running for my life. I´m running for my life because climate change is threatening my people´s way of life. There is a strong link between climate change and the exploitation of the planet and we cannot continue with the extractive mind-set of today. Mother Earth is being destroyed and ecosystems are becoming weaker. Many of them are threatened. Many of them disappeared. According to our knowledge: if nature is not kept healthy, humans don´t survive. We must change the course now, because saving Her is the only way to save ourselves. We have to start to think, respect, listen and take our responsibilities. We have to change how we relate to Earth and re-connect with Her. A deeper engagement is possible when we remember that we all belong to each other. When we are connected, we love life and are free to act for it so that we don´t want to destroy it. You do not destroy things that you love, but you respect and take care of them. Because of the thousands of years of symbiosis with Earth, we are still in dialogue with Her, we are the speakers of Earth, we speak Earth and it informs us how to live here. This means not only that we have the solutions, but that we are part of the solution to reach a sustainable future. We cannot keep waiting. The time for change is today and there is no change without protest – so resist, protect, react, mobilize and challenge. How the world will be in the future is up to us, here and now. Protect your soil and land. Land is life. There is no alternative to water. Water is life. Take a stone in your hand and listen.
